SSA Mourns the Passing of Mr. D

Don Donovan (affectionately called Mr. D. by all of his employees) was very proud of the businesses he built and was especially fond of the relationships he developed over the years. In 1932, Mr. Donovan’s father started DG Donovan Spring in Lawrence, MA where Don began working as a teenager. He established himself as a hard worker where he ran a spring delivery route to NH (before the Interstate system made travel to NH easier) bringing broken springs back to the shop in Massachusetts, fixing and then delivering the repaired springs back to NH – he was a one man show. Mr. D recognized there was a strong market in northern New England and in 1954 he started his own Donovan Spring location in Manchester, NH at just 20 years old. He built the business from the ground up and saw the demand for truck equipment in the NH market and added the Donovan Equipment Company to the Spring Company.

Mr. D’s strong work ethic and vision helped build the Spring and Equipment companies from just a handful of employees at the start, to over 90 today. In 2002, a brand new 73,000 square foot facility was built in Londonderry, NH to house both companies. Currently, Donovan Spring is one of the largest stocking warehouses in New England and many other spring companies, businesses and customers have come to rely on Donovan Spring for hard to find parts and inventory as well as great service.

Mr. D came to work every day (including Saturdays) even at age 84 – making his daily rounds in the shop and engaging with the employees, who he always considered part of his extended family and many of which have been with the company for over 30 years. Mr. D always left a lasting impression on whoever he was talking to and was a genuine friend and mentor. His bright presence and positive demeanor is greatly missed by all who knew him. Rod Hudoba, V.P. of Donovan Spring Co. worked with Mr. Donovan for 56 years, “He was just the best friend I could ever have.” Mr. D had many great memories of attending SSA conventions with Rod, especially winning golf tournaments with Rod, Ron and Lee. He was always a fierce competitor whether in business, on the golf course or rooting for his New York Giants. Many of our employees and customers say it best when they say, “he was just the greatest guy”.

Donald F. Donovan, 84, of Bedford, NH died August 13, 2018 at his residence after a sudden illness.
